Authorities say two single-engine planes have collided in midair over western Alaska and one of the pilots is presumed dead. Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters says the two pilots were the only people aboard the planes when they collided Friday near the village of  Nightmute.

She says one plane landed and the other crashed and burned.

The pilot of a Ryan Air Cessna 207 that put down safely was identified as 26-year-old Kirsten Sprague. She says Sprague was able to walk away but was flown to Bethel, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) away, for a medical evaluation.

The spokeswoman says a Cessna 208 Caravan crashed and burned on impact. She says 24-year-old Scott Veal of Kenai, Alaska, is presumed dead although no body has yet been recovered.
