In today’s fast pace, less disciplined and stressed lifestyle it has become crucial to take preventive measures to stay away from all sorts of health problems. If not done so, any time any moment any lifestyle disease (to be precise) could grab the body such as heart failure, diabetes and so on. The most innovative mode for gaining positive impact on heart is Laughter.

Rightly read, laughter leads to better functioning of vascular function. It has the great potential to lessen the risk of heart failures. This has been proved through the research carried out at University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. The research states, while watching a humorous movie an individual laughs to the fullest. Consequently, blood vessel lining expands and flow of blood also improves leading to enhanced heart functioning. On the other hand while watching a stressed movie the blood vessels narrows down resulting in strained functioning of heart which could cause lead to heart problems.

Dr. Michael Miller, Professor of Medicine and lead investigator states that idea of research on positive emotions like laughter came after when other studies showed that stressed mental condition constricts the blood vessel.

First initial study was conducted 10 years ago on group of 300 men and women. Amongst them few were having heart diseases. They completed a questionnaire pertinent to situational humor. Volunteers suffering with heart problems didn’t find situation funny. However, this study could not prove that humorous approach to daily situation prevents heart diseases but it was the beginning to more similar studies on to find if laughter affects vessel function directly.

In research presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Paris suggested incorporating laughter in everyday routine prevents heart problem. In this study, volunteers watched few hilarious segment of funny movie "There's something about Mary" on first day and next day watched stressful movie "Saving Private Ryan" opening segment. It was observed while watching stressful movie blood vessel produced detrimental response known as vasoconstriction that reduces blood flow. Further, watching stessful movie showed development of atherosclerosis which has negative impact on blood vessels.

30-50% change was seen in blood vessel diameter in 300 and more measurements amid laughter (blood vessel extension) and mental stress (blood vessel contraction) situations. "The magnitude of change we saw in the endothelium after laughing was consistent and similar to the benefit we might see with aerobic exercise or static use" says Dr. Miller. Endothelium lines the inner surface of blood vessles and develops chemicals in response to injury and inflammation.

Laughing should be made a part of everyday healthy lifestyle. However, more studies are required in same line. "What we really need is a randomized clinical trial to determine whether positive emotions reduce cardiovascular events above and beyond today's standard of care therapies," concluded Dr. Miller.

There is a famous idiom “laughter is the best medicine”. Hence, lets all of us put behind all our sophisticated inhibitions and lets laugh our heart out as laughter makes heart happy and happy heart is happy you!
