ISLAMABAD: Sindh is considered to be the worst affected province by the current monsoon floods in Pakistan as it is feared that the total number of flood stricken people could exceed 300,000.

According to information available with The News, National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has initiated the process of collecting data of people affected by the flash floods in Sindh.

Meanwhile Nadra officials were collecting data of flood-affected areas particularly loss of standing crops and infrastructure throughout the country in order to get the areas declared as calamity hit.

Reliable sources from Nadra also informed The News that the federal government has decided to compensate the flood-affected people in Sindh with Rs20,000 each on priority basis while the affectees of flash floods in Sindh will get this compensation amount in two instalments.

Meanwhile, as Sindh has reportedly been most affected province in the country from the current flash floods, therefore it is also expected that Sindh could be declared calamity-hit province to facilitate the farmers and other citizens affected by the floods and monsoon rains. Sources further disclosed that the federal government has also been considering options to rehabilitate and compensate the flood stricken people from Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and in this regard policy would soon be finalized.

Despite recommendations by the Federal Flood Commission (FFC) to tackle flash floods similar to 2010, the authorities failed to make necessary arrangements in the light of pre-emptive measures proposed by the FFC in its “Annual Flood Report 2010” to protect thousands of people across the country from being hit by monsoon-induced catastrophe this year.

According to an estimate, hundreds of thousands of acres of standing crops have been devastated in flash-floods across the country and thousands of people had to leave their homes due to heavy floods particularly in Thatta and Badin.

Numerically, in Badin alone more than 1,000 fish farms worth millions of rupees have been washed away. The poor in the area have no assets and their livelihood is dependent only on natural resources. All their assets including crops, fish, trees and land have been destroyed and now they are looking towards the government and countrymen for assistance.
