Monday afternoon saw Keralites launch a blitzkrieg on the micro-blogging site Twitter with #Being Mallu turning hugely popular.
Not just the tweeple, even irregular bloggers across the globe re-tweeted original one-liners and punch lines borrowed from popular Malayalam movies a hundred times late into the evening.

The trending (most tweeted about, in Twitter-speak) was made possible for the first time by Madhu Menon (madmanweb), a chef, restaurant consultant, and food photographer, who lives in Bangalore, with the help of a few friends.

The tweets showed great creativity in expressing the typical Malayali within the 140-word format. An ardent blogger who tweets in the peculiar twitter handle Vadakkus wrote, “BeingMallu is appropriately inserting witty and famous movie dialogues in between conservations.”

Samjith Nair wrote “BeingMallu is taking a ticket to Dubai and reaching Marina beach in Chennai,” apparently referring to a Mohanlal- Srinivasan film.

MTVIndia commented, “Politicians are secular. They don't care whether people are BeingMallu or not. They are busy Beingchaalu.”

Amusing tweets went like this. Shabna Zaheer, from Kent, wrote “BeingMallu is your driver pulls the seat belt on when there's a traffic warden and then takes it off.

Jithin Paul Varghese tweeted “Ever had beef roast and porotta for breakfast” and Danusha Gokul ( Danusha007) “BeingMallu is bonding with bakery chettans anywhere in the world. Oru chaya varette .”

Cyril Sebastian wrote “BeingMallu will make you addict to salt mango tree at breakfast” while Bindu Menon (binduenigma) tweeted “Once upon a time BeingMallu was all about being a steno/secretary. Now mallus are smart professionals, consultants, IAS and MBAs.”
Some had cricket on their mind and pace bowler Sreesanth catching Misbah's pre-meditated shot at Twenty20 match “ When Misbah scooped the ball in 2007 World Cup little did he know there is a always a mallu in every corner of the world, ” wrote Bala Ranganath.
Sushil Menon, observed “BeingMallu is being vocal about your rights in Kerala and silent about it outside the State, ” while Mary Ann Theresa wrote “ Aundies (aunties) dripping with gold referring to you as Mol or Mon.”

Arun with the handle Vigu123 writes “Even the auto driver speaks English and has a degree.” While Rony Jacob says “You need white collar job in Kerala and any job outside Kerala.”

Technoblogger from Oman, Sangeetha Sridhar (Sangitasri), gave her impressions of the State “Harivarasanam, kadalinakkare ponore, poomukhavathilkal, manjil virinja poove..” Ms. Sridhar, who is from Andhra Pradesh, says “BeingMallu is a pleasant smile even in a remote place followed by ‘nattil evide' enquiry.”

Jyothi Menon (Ruminative), an NRI based in Singapore, mentions “BeingMallu is world's biggest busybodies. Loves to make fun of themselves and others.” Vysakh says “BeingMallu still trending. Seems the entire Gulf region has declared a holiday.”
