Unique lake Hamilton Pool

Hamilton Pool (Pool Gameltona) was formed when the cave collapsed underground river over a thousand years ago, when this was created by the waterfall and grotto, where you can swim. Hamilton Pool is a perfect example of a typical geology Balcones Canyonlands and Edwards Plateau. The pool is located near the Pedernales River and Hamilton Creek in southwest Travis County.



There is evidence of Tonkawa and Apache tribes, it is a very old lake in these neighborhoods. Tribal interest was drawn to this place because of its lush vegetation, abundant wildlife and the natural shelter provided by the grotto. In 1860, Morgan C. Hamilton bought the land. His brother, Andrew Hamilton, the 10th governor of Texas, in whose honor was named this body of water.

In 1880 the family bought this place Reimer in Hamilton to raise cattle here, and sheep. Reimers were German immigrants. Legend has it that their son found a pool of eight during his travels on the site, by the way is 232 acres or 938,871 square meters! Reimers opened the pool to the public, although in those days few people have visited this place to rest.


Hamilton Creek flows over a cliff and falls from 18 meters to the pool. The coastline consists of rocky limestone, which are located only on one side of the pool. But by the 1960s and 1980s, its popularity took off Hamilton Pool. Because of the sheer number of people park begun to suffer. Over the decades has changed the ecosystem, and Hamilton Pool was in danger.

In 1985, Travis County has recognized this and bought 232 acres of land at Reimers. Pool closed for swim sometimes, it happens when a too high level of natural bacteria. Water from the reservoir to drink and use for cooking is prohibited, the park is equipped with rest rooms. Guided tours are available upon request.
