Fit of fury led to Ghatkopar murders

He said that Jayram made it difficult for him to perform his duties, which included preparing food. Jayram would sweep the 325-square-foot flat and chant till Gopal left for work at 9.30 am. "The same thing happened on Tuesday," said a police officer.
At around 5.45 am that day, Gopal asked Jayram to stop sweeping as dust was falling in the flour he was preparing. The two argued and Radhabhai shouted at Gopal. "The next moment Jayram allegedly charged at Gopal. This annoyed Gopal who in a fit of anger hit Jayram's head with an iron rod and took him to the bathroom were he smashed his head with a stone. Later, Gopal strangled his mother with a dupatta," said deputy commissioner of police (Zone VII) Sanjay Shintre.
Gopal then settled the house and left for work as usual at 9.30 am. He returned at 8.15 pm, with a chair for his mother to use when she answered nature's call. At 9 pm, he alerted neighbour Kiran Chheda about the murders. Chheda called the police.
To give a robbery angle, Gopal filed a complaint that unidentified people had robbed a chain and ear-rings from his mother. However, on Wednesday evening the police received the post-mortem report, which said the victims were killed more than 12 hours before the bodies were found. "The post-mortem report showed that the murders occurred at around 6 am and he said in his complaint that he had left for work at around 9.30 am," an investigator said. Gopal was detained on Thursday and arrested on Friday. The Vikhroli magistrate's court has remanded him to police custody till April 27.
Shintre said Gopal wouldn't admit to his crime initially. "He asked why he should kill his mother and brother, when he had sacrificed his life to care for them." The police found a chain and ring bought by Gopal in 2007, his mother's chain and ear-rings and Jayram's ring in a box in the cupboard. "When he was informed that the neighbours had been called to identify the jewellery, he became nervous and accepted his crime. He said he had purchased a gold chain and ring in 2007 to get married. But it never happened. Initially, he said this chain and ring belonged to his aunt, but that turned out to be false," Shintre said. The questioning was led by Shintre, Ghatkopar senior inspector C V Zendekar and others.
Gopal told the police that he had begun worrying about who would look after him in his old age and if he fell ill. No one was ready to marry him because of his family's condition. He became agitated on three occasions when marriage proposals failed. Also, his mother supported his brother and argued with him for no reason. The Ghatkopar police said Gopal had a heated argument with his brother and mother over a property matter earlier, but the killings were a spontaneous result of losing his temper with two people he had cared for.
