Pakistan Army Chief: Forces Have 'Broken the Back' of Insurgents

Pakistan's army chief says his forces have "broken the back" of insurgents linked to the Taliban and al-Qaida, following criticism from Washington that Pakistan's security forces are not doing enough to fight militancy.  

Army General Ashfaq Kayani said Saturday, "God willing, we will soon prevail."  He made the comments in a televised speech at the Pakistan Military Academy north of Islamabad.  Kayani said in his address to the military cadets that Pakistan is fully aware of the internal and external threats to the country. 
 

U.S. officials want Pakistan to launch a military campaign in the country's North Waziristan tribal region where Haqqani and Afghan Taliban elements are believed to be based.  

Earlier this week, Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, accused Pakistan's intelligence agency of having ties with the Haqqani network, one of the most brutal Taliban groups. 

Pakistan is crucial for U.S. efforts to stabilize Afghanistan, but relations between the two allies have been strained since the fatal shooting of two Pakistanis by a CIA contractor in the city of Lahore in January.
