In a step towards fulfilling the wishes of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, a high-level committee of the Parliament headed by outgoing Prime Minister S Rimpoche has submitted its report recommending sweeping changes in the Tibetan charter to allow Dalai Lama’s political retirement.
The report presented to the Parliament secretary will now be discussed in the three-day national general meeting of Tibetans to be held at Tibetan Children Village School on May 21. This will be followed by discussions in the special session of the Parliament for approval.
The Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, on the last day of its session on March 25, had adopted a resolution to convene a special session of the Parliament to decide on major amendments in the Tibet Charter to relieve Dalai Lama of his political functions. After discussions and approval of the proposed changes in the Charter, another meeting of the committee will be held on May 28 to approve the amendments.
“The powers earlier exercised by Dalai Lama will be divided between the newly elected Prime Minister and Speaker and deputy speaker of the Parliament. The Supreme Judicial Commission of the Tibetan government in exile will also get certain powers,” said Rimpoche.
