UNSC passes anti-piracy resolution
New Delhi:
On New Delhi’s initiative, the United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution that tackles the problem of piracy for the first time.
So far, the UNSC had not considered the problems of people taken hostage by pirates, officials at the Indian mission in New York said.
The UNSC Resolution 1976 adopted by the Security Council on April 11 “strongly condemned” the growing practice of hostage-taking by pirates operating off the coast of Somalia and expresses “serious concern at the inhuman conditions hostages face in captivity”. It also recognised the “adverse impact” of the act of hostage-taking on the families of the victims.
The resolution called for the “immediate release of all hostages” and noted the importance of cooperation among member states on this issue. Resolution 1976, adopted under Chapter VII of the UN Charter and co-sponsored by India, also called upon all member countries to cooperate on the issue of hostage-taking.
The resolution urged states and international organisations to “share evidence and information for anti-piracy law enforcement purposes”. With these elements, resolution 1976 is expected to help countries in dealing with the scourge of piracy and hostage-taking.
Officials said the problem of piracy off the coast of Somalia was a serious threat to international security. Somali pirates are operating further and further off from the Somali coast.
Officials said members of the Security Council widely appreciated India’s contribution in the drafting and adoption of the resolution.
