ISLAMABAD: The cross-border incursions from Afghanistan have increased during last couple of months and dozens of Pakistani security personnel have so far been killed in the series of such attacks with the latest occurring on Tuesday and resulting in the death of four Pakistani soldiers.
According to the data collected from sources in the security forces and tribal areas, seven incidents of mortar firing from Afghanistan side occurred during the months of June and July. The sources said that in these incidents, 64 mortar shells landed in Pakistani territory of South Waziristan.
Bajaur Agency, Dir and Chitral have been the target of terrorist activities from across the border. Terrorists intruding into Pakistani territory from Afghanistan killed the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) personnel and policemen in Kharkari area of Dir district on April 21. In the first week of May, one policeman was killed by terrorists and three civilians were taken hostage in an attack on Urtsoon Post in Chitral.
In another cross border attack, terrorists killed 30 police and Levies personnel on June 1. In this attack, 17 of the 30 personnel were killed on the spot while their hands tied at their back. Terrorists also destroyed five schools in the area.
In a similar cross-border attack of terrorists from Afghanistan on June 16, five persons, including three anti-terrorist armed volunteers, and two women were killed in Mano Zangal area of Bajaur Agency.
In another cross-border attack in Surokuli and Nusrat areas of Dir on July 6 involving 250-300 miscreants, the terrorists destroyed three schools and a mosque while a child was killed in the attack. The local peace committee members responded timely and 11 terrorists were killed in their retaliatory attack.
In the latest attack from across the border in Afghanistan, mortar shells hit a Pakistan military post in South Waziristan Agency killing four soldiers on Tuesday. According to the sources, two other soldiers were wounded in the attack. More than 20 mortar shells were fired from across the border and three of them slammed into an FC check post in Angoor Adda area.
