Through the night, 13-year-old Shahana searched the corpses wrapped in shrouds at the Kalka Mail mishap site in Fatehpur and every time she lifted the white cloth, she prayed to God that it was not her missing brother.

Shahana, her mother Sakeena, father Sulaiman and brother Shehzad, were part of the ill-fated Kalka Mail which derailed on Saturday leaving over 68 people dead and 259 injured. The family, which belonged to Bhogal in Nizamuddin area of New Delhi, was on their way to Kolkata, where Shahana's maternal parents live.

Sakeena died on the spot while Shahana's father's leg was fractured in the mishap. However, brother Shehzad could not be traced even 12 hours after the accident.

The derailment took place at 12.20 pm on Saturday when the packed train from Howrah reached near Malwa station, nearly 120 kms from Lucknow. The train was moving at a speed of 108 km/hour.

The family was sleeping inside S-2 coach of the train when the bogies derailed.

Shehzad (10) fell off the berth and was thrown to the other end of the coach. This was the last time Shahana saw him.

"It felt like an earthquake had struck. Everything was moving. Everything shook. I saw my mother die in front of my eyes...I saw my father break his leg but I couldn't see where Shehzad went," Shahana said.

Throughout the night, Shahana kept looking around, searching among the dead, when finally at five in the morning, she realised she would never see Shehzad again. He was dead.

"What should I do now? Where should I go? Why did this happen with us?," inconsolable Shahana said.
