UP: 38 killed, 29 injured as train rams into bus
As many as 38 people, including children, were killed and 29 others critically injured when a bus carrying wedding guests was hit by the Mathura-Chhapra Express train at an unmanned crossing in Patiyali area of Kanshiram Nagar district early on Thursday.
The victims were returning to Gadhiya village in Etah district after the ceremonies at Arupura village in Kanshiram Nagar.
Kanshiram Nagar's Additional Superintendent of Police Dadan Pal Singh said survivors told police they spotted the approaching train when the bus was 500 metres away from the unmanned railway crossing. They warned the driver but he drove on.
The speeding train hit the rear end of the bus, smashing it into several parts. The train driver pulled up soon after the impact and informed railway control room.
People from the Arupura village helped the police in rescue operations.
District Magistrate Selva Kumari and Superintendent of Police R K Srivastava reached there within an hour.
Dadan Pal Singh said 32 people died on the spot while 35 injured were taken to the district hospital where six more succumbed to their injuries. Of the 29 injured, 15 are critical, the ASP said.
Singh also said it was not immediately known if the bus driver was among the victims. However, PRO of Northern Eastern Railway, Izatnagar Division, Rajendra Singh said he survived and ran away from the spot.
“As the incident took place due to the negligence of the bus driver, the railways will lodge an FIR against him,” he said.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 2 lakh each for the kin of the deceased, Rs 50,000 each for the seriously injured and Rs 10,000 each for those who suffered minor injuries.
The PRO said it took four hours to clear the tracks of debris before train services could resume again.
