China News: Bride imports.

China wakes up to bride imports

=================================================
BEIJING: Increasing bride imports and fears of rising ethnically mixed population are forcing Chinese authorities to tackle the country's sex ratio imbalance. Brides are imported from neighboring countries like VietnamLaos and North Korea, as millions are unable to find wives due to the imbalance.
An estimated 36,000 brides are annually imported in Zhajiang province alone from China's poorer provinces and neighboring countries. Girls moving from one province to another to find wealthier husbands have added to the problem. The Communist Party of China fears this would lead to social imbalance.

There are 23 million more boys than girls in the 0-19 age group, according to the Staterun China Academy of Social Science research. It estimates that tens of thousands of young men would soon find it very difficult to find wives.

Female foeticide is among the major reasons for decreasing female population. Sex determination tests are illegal but the use of type-B ultrasonic facilities are widespread.

The gender imbalance has been consistently worsening over the past two decades despite official assurances. A recent census revealed that there are 13% more men than women in China.
