SCHOOLMATES from Laura Johnson's former grammar school are shocked after seeing her charged with five counts of theft.
The millionaire's daughter, who has been accused of being a getaway driver for looters, was a "polite, lovely and popular" teenager who could have been involved in the London riots only through naivety, a friend claimed yesterday.
Former schoolmates were left shocked after she was charged.
The 19-year-old student was allegedly driving a car containing stolen televisions, mobile phones, cigarettes and alcohol worth more than pound stg. 5000 ($7900) when she and two men were arrested near a retail park in South London on Monday night. Ms Johnson, who lives with her family in a gated pound stg. 1 million home with a tennis court, pleaded not guilty in court on Tuesday.
Nick Challis, who studied with Ms Johnson, said: "She was very polite and absolutely lovely.
"Maybe she was just naive and didn't know what was in the car."
Ms Johnson is due to enter the second year of a degree in English and Italian at Exeter University, in southwest England, next month, but her trial could leave her future career plans in tatters. The university said it would wait to decide whether she could continue with her course.
