PESHAWAR: Armed militants killed three cops and rescued two of their commanders from policy custody on the busy Jamrud Road just outside the University of Peshawar on Friday.
The policemen had brought the two detainees to the Khyber College of Dentistry from the Central Prison, Peshawar, and were on their way back to the jail after having them examined when militants attacked them. The negligence of the authorities could be gauged form the fact that the police party was not provided an official vehicle to transport the dangerous detainees and were asked to arrange a private cab themselves.
ìThe policemen were waiting for a cab when they were attacked by armed men driving a car,î said a police official. There were reports that one or two motorbikes were also used in the attack but this could not be confirmed.
Jalaluddin, the Public Relations Officer for the Peshawar Police, said those killed in the attack were police constables Tariq Hussain, Jafar and Raees. The in-charge of the police party, he added, remained unharmed. The two commanders freed by the attackers were identified as Zaqeem Shah of Kohat and Nadeem Abbas of Tedi Bazaar in Jamrud, Khyber Agency. Both were charged under the Anti-Terrorism Act, said the official.
Jail authorities had not conveyed to the police that the detainees who were being taken to the hospital were important, said Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Imtiaz Altaf while talking to reporters after the funeral prayers for the slain cops at the Malik Saad Shaheed Police Lines. The bodies of the fallen cops were later sent to their villages for burial after a smartly turned out police contingent saluted their coffins.
The city police chief said the police would have made better arrangements had they been told that the detainees being transported to the hospital were militants and not ordinary prisoners.
Senior Minister Bashir Bilour called for forming a judicial commission to probe the incident to find out if it happened due to negligence or other factors. The minister said the incident indicated negligence on the part of the authorities as the attackers not only managed to get their men freed from the custody of the police but also gunned down three policemen in a congested area.
Meanwhile, the female victim of the suicide bombing carried out by a young girl in Lahori Gate on Thursday was identified as Grana, wife of Kachkol, from the Sheikhabad locality in Peshawar. She had come to the area to shop.
