MANILA, Philippines - A suspected bomber and his companion were killed when an improvised bomb they were carrying exploded prematurely in front of a government office in Kidapawan City, before dawn today.

Superintendent Chino Mamburam, Kidapawan City police chief, identified the suspected bomber as Manampan Manalim and his companion, Kalim Indigay.
Mamburam said the improvised bomb that Manalim was carrying exploded while they were on a highway, in front of the National Irrigation Administration office in Barangay Amas, around 1 a.m.

Manalim died on the spot while Indigay died in a hospital.

Mamburam said that before Indigay died, he confessed that he was a regular member of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) under a certain Commander Kautin and they were to transport the bomb to Kidapawan City.

Police said that the attempted bombing attack could have been a part of a campaign by certain groups to disrupt the peace talks between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Philippine government.

The police chief said that police and military units in the region have been placed on high alert in anticipation of more attacks. -- with Associated Press
