Now, cook the perfect boiled egg!

A group of schoolgirls have cracked the secret of cooking the perfect boiled egg.

The team of twelve science students from Sherborne Girls School in Dorset have found that the perfect boiled egg does indeed take six minutes to be served healthy.
They were taking part in an experiment commissioned by the Royal Society of Chemistry and led by Professor Hal Sosabowski, principal lecturer in Chemistry at Brighton University.

Soft-boiled eggs are commonly served in egg cups, where the top of the egg is cut off with a knife, spoon or egg scissors, using a teaspoon to scoop the egg out. Other methods include breaking the eggshell by tapping gently around the top of the shell with a spoon.

The eggs can be eaten with buttered toast cut into strips, which are then dipped into the runny yolk. In the United Kingdom, these strips of toast are known as 'soldiers'.

Setting out to test one of the nation's all-time favourite breakfasts, the girls confirmed not only the optimum time for boiling an egg but also the key variables that make up the perfect dipping soldier.

"We've had a brilliant day of real scientific inquiry. I was particularly impressed by the pupils' diligence in generating results but not believing what they saw upon first inspection, checking and re-checking their results, and scrutinising their own experimental design to eliminate variables and error," the Telegraph quoted Professor Sosabowski as saying.

"I was proud to be involved in the serious scientific inquiry. These pupils are certainly members of the scientific community."

Sixth-form student Rosanna Younger, 17, meanwhile, has come forward with the hypothesis that "applying margarine to toast will produce stronger soldiers than applying butter".

"It has been really interesting to identify a strong trend in such a short time. We kept the experiment simple, focusing on one aspect of boiled eggs and soldiers," she said.
