On Christmas Eve, 1971, the airplane that Koepcke was flying on was struck by lightning and disintegrated at 10,000 ft over the Peruvian rainforest. When she woke up from the fall, she was still strapped to her seat. She survived on candy for 9 days until she found a hut where some Lumberjacks helped her get back to civilization.
