For the second New Year’s Day in a row, residents in Beebe, Arkansas, woke up to find their streets littered with dead red-winged blackbirds. But while 2011’s bird kill was written off as a bizarre fluke caused by exploding fireworks, local authorities believe the latest slaughter is the deliberate work of a criminal.
“Someone went into the roost and set off fireworks. We didn’t catch them, we don’t know who,” Ginny Porter, a spokeswoman for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, told CNN. If caught, those responsible could face criminal charges, according to local Arkansas media.
