Staff Reporter ROING, May 26: A lady was allegedly gang raped by seven persons in Meka Village of Lower Dibang Valley district in the night of May 19 last. After offering to surrender to the police, the seven alleged accused are still dodging the police dragnet. The victim, wife of a non-Arunachalee engaged as a chowkidar by Meka Panchayat, had gone out to look for her husband that night at about 8 pm. Hearing noises from a nearby Musup (Community Hall), she went in to see if her husband was there but instead found several persons partying. When she turned to leave the persons blocked her way. The autorickshaw in which she had come was also sent away. Later, she was gagged and dragged to a nearby jungle and raped. When she came to her senses in the morning she found herself in the house of one of the accused. Her wrist watch, chain and earrings were all gone. Hoping to get justice, the victim along with her husband approached the Meka Village Panchayat but in vain. Finally, she reported the matter to the Roing Police and a case under section 376(G)/394 IPC has been registered against the alleged seven accused. Acting on the direction of the victim, police have recovered the victim’s shawl from the place of occurrence and the one given to her by one of the accused, in whose house she regained consciousness. Despite Meka Banngo (traditional governing council) Secretary’s assurances to the police, the accused are yet to be handed over.
