In a shocking incident, a Delhi Traffic Police constable and his friend have been arrested for allegedly raping a 30-year-old woman insurance agent in a car.
Police said constable Manoj Kumar, 25, and friend Sudhir met the woman, who is employed with a reputed insurance company in the capital, outside her office in Connaught Place on Sunday evening. Soon after, they went to her rented house for dinner.
Police said they then took her for a drive in a car. “The victim was taken to a secluded place near Delhi Cantonment, overpowered and raped,” a police officer said.
Investigators said the woman, a native of Assam, and Manoj were friends and Sudhir knew her through him. They claimed the accused lured her out for the car drive with the intention of raping her.
After raping the woman, they dropped her near her house in Lajpat Nagar on Monday morning and warned not to approach police.
However, the investigators said, she narrated the incident to her family and subsequently reported the matter to police in the evening.
“We conducted a medical test on the victim after she and her family lodged a complaint. After the tests confirmed rape, we arrested the constable and his friend,” a senior Delhi Police officer said.
Police said they had also recovered the victim’s mobile phone and about Rs2,000 which the accused had taken away.
This is not the first time that a woman has been raped in the capital in a car. A Delhi University student from the northeast was forcefully dragged inside a car from Delhi Cantonment by a group of men in 2005 and raped. The girl had gone out to buy eatables.
