Sex Crimes- Crimes against the minor's rise!

Rape of minors: Cases see a 100% rise in a year in city

This is a matter for great concern

In one year, the number of rape cases involving minor victims has increased over 100 per cent.

According to the records of the Chandigarh Police, rape cases of minors have outnumbered the number of cases involving adult women.

In 2008, 10 rape cases involving minor victims were registered in the city. This number rose to 22 in 2009 — a total of 30 rape cases were registered in the year. In other words, minor rape cases constituted 70 per cent of the total number of rape cases.

A police officer said in many cases, the accused was either a relative, neighbour or someone living in the same locality and that minors were perceived as “vulnerable and soft targets”.

According to UT SSP S S Srivastava, a large number of rape cases involving minor victims are linked with elopement cases.

But recently, a significant number of rape cases in which the victims were below 10 years old were registered.
