Lucknow A case of rape and dowry harassment was registered against the District Magistrate (DM) of Bihar’s Madhepura district at Jalaun’s Orai Kotwali.

IAS officer Birendra Prasad Yadav, hailing from Dhanbad, allegedly refused to marry a woman after the engagement ceremony. She alleged that they had a physical relationship since 2007 and accused him of criminal intimidation.

The Jalaun Superintendent of Police (SP), Prem Kumar Gautam said the woman handed over the complaint on May 27 and an FIR was lodged after primary investigation.

In her complaint, the woman — a resident of Orai — also named Yadav’s parents Sadhu Sharan and Bhoola Devi and his sisters Sumita, Sunita and Suchita, accusing them of collecting cash and valuables worth over Rs 5 lakh during the engagement. They also allegedly demanded Rs 25 lakh and a luxury car in dowry before the marriage.

According to her, Yadav and his family refused to go ahead with the marriage when they found that her father was unable to meet the dowry demands. The woman lives in a rented flat at the Sushil Nagar Officers Colony in Orai. Her father is a farmer.

Gautam said she alleged that Yadav used to meet her frequently and had forced her into a physical relationship after their engagement was held on January 28, 2007.

She produced video clippings of the engagement ceremony and claimed that Yadav and other family members are shown in the footage.

Jalaun CO, City, Harendra Kumar said: “We are probing into the allegations. The details about the identity and addresses of the accused including Birendra Prasad Yadav will be verified after the police team visits the place mentioned in the FIR.” The case has been registered under sections 498-A (cruelty), 376 (rape), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and the Dowry Act, Kumar added. Yadav refused to comment on the matter.
