ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast -- The U.N. in Ivory Coast says masked men wearing military uniforms opened fire on the U.N. base in Abidjan on Friday night.
The United Nations mission reported Saturday the guards had been followed back to the base after a patrol. The guards returned fire on the six assailants.
As many as 30 people were killed during violent protests Thursday, when longtime opposition leader Alassane Ouattara called on his supporters to seize key state institutions that his opponent has refused to let go of.
Police and troops loyal to the man widely recognized as the loser of last month's presidential election prevented Ouattara's supporters from marching on government buildings Friday. The U.N. certified results showing Ouattara won the presidency.
