Two senior policemen were arrested on Wednesday in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case for failing to provide the former Pakistan Prime Minister adequate security in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, where she had gone to address a political rally when she was assassinated on December 27, 2007.

The two policemen — the former Rawalpindi police chief, Saud Aziz, and a senior member of the force, Khurram Shahzad — were arrested after their bail application was rejected by a court. Besides failing to provide adequate protection, The Rawalpindi police has also been faulted by for washing the crime scene before all the evidence could be gathered.
Though the Pervez Musharraf regime held Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud responsible for the assassination, a United Nations report on the killing found the security arrangements provided to her wanting and raised questions on how the investigation was handled, particularly in the early hours.
