My favorite kind of movie to watch is one that makes me laugh. My least favorite is one that is supposed to make me laugh, but doesn’t. I also like movies that make me think, but those are getting few and far between these days. Looking at the 2011 summer line-up, it looks like there may be a few promising possibilities.
- Bridesmaids – This one has already been released and the advertising caught my eye. The five different bridesmaids all look like real people instead of glamorous actresses and the reviews say that it really is funny.
- Something Borrowed – Another one that caught my attention, this one has also been released already. The plot seems to be a little more complicated than the usual romantic comedy, so it might be worth the watch.
- Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides – Since I’ve already seen the first 3 of the series I might as well watch this one too. I like the Jack Sparrow character played by Johnny Depp and the reviews sound surprisingly good for the 4th movie of a series.
- Horrible Bosses – Even though I’m not crazy about Jennifer Aniston, I really like Kevin Spacey as an actor, so I think I’ll check this one out. Three guys decide to kill their evil bosses so I’ll have to find out if they succeed.
- Cowboys and Aliens – This just sounds too crazy to miss. The Wild West meets Star Trek. I love to watch westerns and this adds a new twist to an old standard complete with seasoned actors Harrison Ford and Keith Carradine.
- Green Lantern – I don’t usually get excited about super hero movies, but this one might have some potential. The story plot doesn’t sound too outlandish and I can’t wait to check out the special effects.
- Cars 2 – Animated movies aren’t just for kids anymore and I have to check out the Cars sequel. Besides, I just love Larry the Cable Guy.
- Atlas Shrugged – I’ve heard so much about the book by Ayn Rand, but I don’t have time to read it. This first of a three part series opened on April 15th and I can’t wait to see it. This one falls under the “movies that make you think” category.
- Zookeeper – With Kevin James and Adam Sandler this movie promises to tickle my funny bone. I’ll be very disappointed if it doesn’t.
- Captain America: The First Avenger – What could satisfy my craving for a patriotic movie better than Captain America? I know it’s another comic book film, but I can’t resist watching a feel good flick about defending our country’s ideals.
I’m no movie critic, but I do know what I like and what I don’t. So many times the movies that are promoted the most have turned out to be huge disappointments. Of all the new releases this summer, these are the ones that will actually get me out to the theaters. The rest I can wait until they come out on TV.
