Didn’t know about Sai chamber valuables: Nephew
Posted: Sun Jun 26 2011, 02:52 hrs Hyderabad:
Sathya Sai Baba’s nephew R J Ratnakar told the police on Saturday that he could not understand why Sai Baba had kept so many valuables with him instead of giving it to the Sathya Sai Central Trust.
Ratnakar, a member of the Trust, was questioned by the police for six hours in connection with the seizure of Rs 35.50 lakh from a vehicle allegedly belonging to the Trust.
The Anantapur District Police utilised the opportunity to question Ratnakar about the cash and valuables found in Sai Baba’s chambers, why they were kept there, if anything could have been stolen, and if there were more chambers that were yet to be opened.
The state government is keenly following this investigation to decide if it needs to take over the Trust.
Ratnakar replied that even he did not have any inkling that so many precious items were lying in Sai Baba’s chambers. He also said that he felt that Sai Baba did not trust anyone and so kept the valuables in his sleeping chamber though he was close to him for nearly 25 years.
The discovery of so much gold, precious stones and cash hidden in the Yajur Mandir has had other effects. A day after it was found and inventoried, Justice (retd) P N Bhagwati resigned from the Sathya Sai Central Trust. He later agreed to take over as Chancellor of Sathya Sai University. The position was offered to him early this year.
Another member, Indulal Shah, is learnt to have also distanced himself from the Trust while Trust Secretary, former IAS officer K Chakravarthi, has indicated to other trustees about quitting.
