Killers didn’t know who J Dey was

MUMBAI: The Dey murder was cracked in a joint operation by the Mumbai crime branch's property and unit 6 cells, which began rounding up seven accused on Saturday. "Three were arrested from Mumbai, three from Rameshwaram in TN, and one from Solapur ," Roy said, adding major leads came from informants. 


The accused have been identified as Kalia, Anil Waghmore , Arun Dhake, Sachin Gaikwad, Nilesh Shengle alias Babloo, Abhijeet Shinde and Mangesh Agawane. All seven were produced amid tight security in a local court on Monday, which remanded them to police custody till July 4. Three motorcycles, a Toyota Qualis, a US-made .32 revolver and 20 rounds of Czech-made ammunition besides 10 mobile phones and Rs 20,000 cash have been recovered from the accused . The police said the search is now on for three more people, including Rajan. 


According to the police, the plot for the hit was hatched days earlier, when Rajan phoned Kalia in Kerala and asked him to travel to Mumbai. Rajan provided him via Skype a physical description of the target Dey and also arranged for Rs 2 lakh for Kalia, who soon left for Nainital to procure the murder weapon. While Kalia was away, police officials said, his friends Arun Dhake and Anil Waghmore hired another four men for the killing .The police say recce, based on Rajan's descriptions, were conducted on June 6 and 8 outside Dey's office in Parel. During those trips, Dey was identified , but the area was deemed unfit for escape. The next two days, the seven accused lay in wait for Dey between Ghatkopar and Powai, but the journalist did not turn up. 


On June 11, the accused spotted Dey leaving Ghatkopar on his motorbike and pursued him six trailed him on three bikes while the last follow in a Qualis to Powai. Around 2.45pm, Kalia, who was riding pillion behind Waghmore, came next to Dey on the bike and fired five shots at him. Dey died soon thereafter. Job done, the seven accused fled to Jogeshwari . On realizing the identity of their victim from TV, Kalia rang Rajan, who provided them another Rs 3 lakh and asked them to flee Mumbai. Kalia stopped eating nonvegetarian food and visited temples in Shirdi, Akkalkot, Madurai and Rameshwaram, where they were caught.
