Priapism: Male Disease Demanding Immediate Care
Did you know that sometimes people can have sudden erections at the most improper time and inappropriate place, for example during a conference, walking in the street or just at a meeting with an important person? And this lasts for about four hours. This male disease is called priapism – a condition that demands immediate care.

Priapism is a painful erection that occurs when the blood in the penis gets trapped and, consequently, unable to drain. By the way it occurs without any sexual stimulation or desire. Strangely as it can sound, priapism occurs in all age groups, newborns are not an exception too. Men between ages five to ten, and 20 to 50 are at risk of suffering from it.
Causes of priapism

The causes of priapism are sometimes very difficult to discover, and sometimes they remain unknown. However, the basic causes include sickle cell anemia, cancers (they affect the penis and prevent the blood outflow) and medications. Among the drugs that can cause priapism are Desyrel (used to treat depression) or Thorazine (used to treat mental illnesses). My health advice is – find a doctor who will examine you and prescribe medications.
Other causes include spinal cord or genital area trauma, black widow spider bites, carbon monoxide poisoning, marijuana and cocaine.

If you are experiencing priapism, the first thing you should do is to find a doctor as you need immediate care. Be ready to answer the following questions: How long does your erection last? What medications and drugs did you use? (Follow my health advice and be honest with your doctor.) When did you start to experience priapism? Did you have a trauma in that body area?

The immediate care assumes quick examination. The doctor will examine you to discover the cause. He’ll also check your rectum and abdomen to see if there is evidence of cancer. This will be the physical examination part. Afterwards, the doctor will take a blood-gas measurement of the penis blood. This analysis is necessary to find out how long you have been experiencing priapism and how much damage it has caused.
Once the examination is over, the doctor will start the treatment procedure about which you can learn in my next post.
