Aligarh, Jun 9 (PTI) Scientists at interdisciplinary biotechnology laboratory of the Aligarh Muslim University claimed to have developed an easy technique for detecting the multi-drug resistant superbug.

A team of scientists have sequenced the gene of three variants of NDM-1 and are now working on the genetics of its gene, Dr Asad Khan of the biotechnology department said in a statement today.

According to the statement scientists at the biotechnology laboratory here have conducted extensive clinical trials using the above technique for detecting the superbug.
Widespread misuse of antibiotics in some countries, including India and Pakistan, has led to the rise of multi-drug resistant bacteria which are nearly impossible to treat, they said.
The New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1 was first identified in December 2009 in New Delhi and since then the scientists have warned of a serious threat of a "exponential spread of this bacteria through humans."

The detection of the superbug, which was first reported in medical journal Lancet in 2009, had sparked off a controversy regarding the origin of this superbug.
