17-year-old girl lynched by father, brothers in Haryana

CHANDIGARH: A 17-year-old girl was allegedly killed by her father and brothers who suspected her character, in Umra village of Hansi sub division of Hisar district on Saturday night.

Ritu, the daughter of a farmer, Rameshwar Singh, had just passed the class X examinations and left the studies. Her parents forced her to discontinue further education, police said.

Rameshwar Singh, the accused father and brothers Sunil alias Fauji and Rajesh and their uncle Jaidev Singh, quietly cremated Ritu, at a cremation ground near their village during late night hours of Saturday.

The incident came to the notice, when Ajit Singh, a neighbor of Rameshwar Singh, informed the police control room (PCR) after hearing screams of the victim, who was mercilessly thrashed by the four in the open courtyard of their house.

"All this happened when I was about to sleep in an open space on the terrace of my house. I heard Ritu's scream. All four of them were mercilessly beating her with sticks and other things. Their family members, especially the women were very much in the house when the incident took place,'' Ajit Singh told policemen.

Sources informed that other members of Rameshwar's family acted as mute spectators of the heart rendering incident which went on for an hour.

Acting on the statement given by Ajit Singh, police have booked Rameshwar, Sunil, Rajesh and Jaidev in a case registered under 302 (murder), 201(destroying the evidence) and 34 (crime committed by more than one person) at Sadar police station of Hansi sub division of the district.

"Investigations have just begun and this is too early to comment. We have recorded the supplementary statement of the complainant, the only eye witness on record. At the same time we are trying to ascertain as to whether she was having an affair with somebody or not. Some of the village men, supporting Rameshwar came to the police station as well," inspector Kailash Sharma, the investigating officer of the case said.
