CHANDIGARH: In a major embarrassment to Punjab police, an assistant inspector general (AIG) rank official, P S Sandhu was arrested for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000, by CBI, on Tuesday.

Sandhu, who is a Punjab Police Service (PPS) officer, had also been arrested in connection with the infamous Moga sex scandal along with some senior police officers and son of former Akali leader three years ago. The sanction for his prosecution was pending with the home department of Punjab government for more than twoand-half years and it was finally given in April 2010.

Sandhu was attached with internal vigilance cell (IVC) of Punjab police, which investigates corruption related complaints against personnel of Punjab police

The tainted cop was arrested from inside a coffee house in Sector 28 and was kept in the guest house of Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) in Sector 35 for questioning.

A senior bureau official told TOI, "A trap was laid after receiving a complaint from a resident of district Mohali, Nishant Sharma, who claimed Sandhu was demanding Rs 3 lakh for not implicating him in a criminal case and the deal was fixed at Rs 50,0000." Sharma had reportedly paid Rs 1 lakh to the accused earlier. A case under Section 7 of Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act, 1988 has been registered against the cop and he would be produced in the court of special CBI judge in Sector 17.
