KARACHI: Altaf Hussain, founder and leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), issued a statement pertaining to his telephonic address on August 3, which he claimed had created a misunderstanding among Sindhi intellectuals and nationalists. He said that his speech was only directed towards elements who had openly mocked and degraded the sacrifices of Urdu and Punjabi speaking Mohajirs for the independence of Pakistan. He further said that he may not have clearly explained his stance but assured that he was the son of the soil and regretted if anyone’s feeling was hurt because of his statement.

Altaf further emphasised that his life and death was connected to the land of Sindh. The soil of Sindh is my mother, Pakistan is my motherland, I am a believer of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai and am prepared to sacrifice my life for peace and stability, he said.

In a video statement earlier, the MQM founder clarified that the reason he appealed to the public to store ration for at least one month was because when terrorists were attacking from the Kati Pahari area, food and other necessary items had become scarce.

In a video message from London, he stated that a situation had been created in Kati Pahari, Orangi town where even small children had to go without milk in a number of houses. He said when the houses and shops were being attacked in Surjani Town and when over 150 motorcycles were torched outside a factory; there was no one to protect the helpless people.

Altaf Hussain once again appealed to the people of Karachi to keep faith in Allah and maintain peace at all costs. In his message, he asked MQM workers and citizens of Karachi to engage every religious and political party for bringing durable peace in Karachi.

He thanked the Director General Rangers and other Rangers official for reaching the affected areas and maintaining peace there. Altaf said that the Rangers were taking action in the affected areas hence the people should have faith in Allah.

He hoped that the Rangers would reach all the affected areas in time and take action to protect the life and property of the people. He appealed to all the religious and political parties to get united for bringing peace in Karachi. He said that if there is peace in Karachi, Pakistan will be peaceful.
