(RTTNews) - A combined operation by the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and Afghan security forces killed a senior Taliban leader on Tuesday.

The forces launched a security operation in Ghormach district, Faryab province, on the basis of information from locals that Mullah Bahuddin and one of his associates are camped there.

The militants opened fire on the force during a search to detain them. Both were killed in the ensuing firefight. Security forces seized a machine gun, rocket propelled grenade mortars, and a pistol from the insurgent location, ISAF said in a statement.

Mullah Bahuddin was a senior Taliban leader responsible for directing multiple attacks on Afghan National Security Forces, and facilitating weapons distribution and suicide bomb attacks in Faryab.

He was a key insurgent leadership figure, connecting the greater Badghis and Ghormach Taliban groups.

Bahuddin is one of more than 50 Taliban insurgents killed in security operations in Faryab province since the beginning of the year.

In other operations in Afghanistan, Afghan and coalition combined security forces seized and destroyed large quantities of marijuana seeds and hashish in Zharay district, Kandahar province.
