DHARAMSHALA: The newly elected Kalon Tripa (prime minister-in-exile) of Tibet's government-in-exile Lobsang Sangay took oath of office on Monday at the central courtyard of Tsuglagkhang, the main temple in Dharamshala.
Sangay (43), a senior Harvard Law School
fellow, was born in India. His swearing-in is seen as a "step towards genuine democracy". Sangay was elected in the third direct elections for the Kalon Tripa held in March. He succeeded
Samdhong Rinpoche, who was in office for two terms of five years each.

In his brief impromptu address, the Dalai Lama said, "Now we have handed over all political responsibilities to the democratically-elected leadership of Lobsang Sangay."

Speaking to reporters, Sangay said, "Given a chance, I would certainly like to meet Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the earliest."

At the ceremony, attended by Central Tibetan Administration, seal of the Kashag (the cabinet) was handed over to Sangay. The seal has been used since the time of the seventh Dalai Lama (1708-1757) in Tibet.

About China, Sangay said, "If the Chinese government is interested to solve the problem through mutual dialogue, we are ready for it. If they want to give general autonomy to Tibet, we are willing to come up with innovative ways to resolve everything."

Sangay also sought EU support. "We want the European Union to look at the Tibetan issue. They should understand what we are striving for. Europe has seen World War I and World War II and they know the meaning of freedom. This is the same freedom for which Tibet
is fighting," he said.
