PATNA: The younger generation which is virtually surviving on fried foods like fried chicken, paneer cutlets and samosas is at a higher risk of heart diseases, experts at the 19th annual conference of India Association of Clinical Medicine said here on Saturday.

Dr Rajeev Gupta from Bhopal, who presented a clinical paper on heart diseases on the second day of the three-day-long conference, said: "The more a youngster consumes fried foods, the more vulnerable he gets to myriad heart complications. It causes premature coronary artery disease in them."

Bollywood star and Patna MP Shatrughan Sinhaformally inaugurated the conference on Saturday evening. Around 500 doctors, having expertise in different diseases, from across the country participated in the event. Leading physicians of Patna and Bihar were also present at the meet, where several advanced research papers on clinical medicine were presented.

A comprehensive clinical paper on cancer was presented by Dr Madhuchanda Kar from Kolkata. "Technical advancement has come as a godsend for cancer patients. It has significantly increased survival rate. Now, patients need not worry as anxiety due to cancer is as dangerous as cancer itself," Kar said.

"If you are HIV positive and also get malaria, you do not need to start counting your days. People consider HIV accompanied with malaria fatal. But timely intervention can save your life," said Dr Anita Sharma from Dehradun and Dipanjan Bandyopadhyay from Kolkata.

Dr Anita and Dipanjan presented separate clinical papers on Emergency Medicine here. Dr A K Agrawal from Apollo Hospital, Delhi, also delivered a paper on kidney transplant in HIV-positive persons.

Through his clinical paper, Dr A K Virmani from Jamshedpur tried to allay fears of patients who undergo routine Thyroid Function Test, in which some minor abnormalities are detected. "Many such patients start worrying about their health and also go for sudden treatment. Actually, it is not necessary. Many of these abnormalities subside naturally without treatment," Dr Virmani added.

Dr B M Hegde from Mysore delivered a clinical paper on Evidence Based Medicine. Dr Ajay Kumar, chairman of the scientific session of the conference, was later installed as the national president of Indian Association of Clinical Medicine.

In the first session of the conference, taking place at a posh hotel here, discussions on cardio pulmonary resuscitation was held on Friday. The session was very useful considering the huge number of patients of diabetes.
