TIMERGARA: Four people were killed in a roadside blast in the Ghwara Banda area in Lower Dir district early Tuesday, a police official said.

District Police Officer Saleem Marwat said the explosion occurred after a car taking a man for eye treatment to Swat hit an improvised explosive device (IED) in Ghwara Banda in the Jandul area. The four occupants of the car were killed in the explosion, he added.

The victims include the eye patient Azizur Rahman, driver Aminul Haq, Rahmat Tawab and Islam Badshah. All belonged to the area where the blast took place.

Saleem Marwat said the police found another unexploded bomb from the site of the blast, which was defused by the bomb disposal unit. He said the police carried out a search operation in the area, arrested three suspicious persons and recovered army uniforms and weapons from them.

Sirajuddin Ahmad, a spokesman for the Swat Taliban who are now based in Afghanistan’s Kunar province, claimed responsibility for the attack. He insisted that Aziz was a Lashkar member who had killed two of their fighters a year ago. He said it was a revenge attack by the Taliban.

The Taliban have been launching cross-border attacks on security forces and villagers in Lower Dir, Upper Dir and Chitral districts for the last several months. Only last month, they carried out a deadly suicide attack and killed an ANP local leader in the area.
