Twenty-year-old Nissar Ahmad Bhat and his friends were targeted just because they applied for police jobs.
Stone-pelters burnt their certificates before their very eyes and they were even called traitors. Their tormentors also hit them on their legs so that they would fail the physical tests.
“I lost my father in 1995. I worked as a labourer but went on to do graduation. But when I went to join a recruitment rally, on my return I was beaten up, my documents were snatched and then burnt. We were helpless. They said you should fight for aazadi and not jobs,” said Nissar.
“I worked as a labourer to educate him but they have shattered our hopes. He was very small when his father died. He has been robbed of everything. We request Omar sahib to admit him in the police test,'' said Nissar's mother.
The police have promised action against the miscreants.
“We have identified the culprits and would nab them soon. The boys have challenged their attitude and harassment and that is a good sign,” said Shafqat Wattali, DIG police, South Kashmir.
Down but not out, the five youth will request the state education board to re-issue their certificates so that they can apply again.
The police too say they will be given another chance.
