Chandigarh: A girl was allegedly reprimanded by her college principal for wearing a "vulgar" T-shirt, triggering strong protest by her fellow students of a dental institute under Panjab University on Thursday.

The students of Dr H S Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital organised a rally to demand resignation of the Institute's Director.

A girl student at the five-year-old dental institute in Sector 25 here had earlier this week accused Institute Director Dr Krishan Gauba of harassing her on the dress she was wearing, sparking off a protest.
The Director, on the other hand, said he had done nothing wrong and was contemplating to resign as he was anguished that his name was being maligned.
The teaching work at the institute remained suspended on Thursday while patients visiting the institute were also put to inconvenience.

The dental institute students backed by local students' organisations raised slogans against the Director and University authorities. The University's Vice Chancellor has formed a four-member committee of women teachers and which has been asked to submit its report on the incident this week after the girl's parents submitted a written complaint.

"The incident has been blown out of proportions as some vested interests are also behind this. I had only told the girl student that since doctors have to interact and treat the patients, they should be decently dressed. There was no vulgar or offensive remark made by me about her T-shirt, but she went on offensive defending that there was nothing wrong in what she was wearing. I tried to calm her down and thought the matter had ended, but she dragged the issue," Gauba told said.

He said that he had been made Director of the Institute five years back and now the way events were turning out he was seriously thinking to resign from the post.

"I was sent on deputation from PGIMER to the institute and I gave my best to see that it grows and flourishes. However, I am deeply anguished now and have proceeded on leave. Shortly, I may resign as the Institute Director as well as from other posts that I hold in the University," Gauba said.
