Anni Dewani’s family last night appealed to her murder suspect husband: “Face justice and end this nightmare for all of us.”
The sympathetic plea came as Shrien Dewani, 31, was released from hospital. His lawyers denied he had attempted suicide and said he had simply reacted badly to sleeping pills he was taking.
Anni’s uncle Ashok Hindocha said the pressure on both families was unbearable and called on the millionaire to go back to South Africa to face trial. He said: “For everyone’s sake, for your health and for ours, please give us closure and face justice. Every day this is hurting us and it’s hurting you.
“We think about Anni when we wake up and when we go to bed as I’m sure you do.” Dewani, 31, denies his wife’s murder on their honeymoon in Cape Town. He was taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary by ambulance on Sunday night after his worried sister dialled 999.
He has missed two extradition hearings this year because of stress and his friends expressed fears that he was suicidal.
Ashok, whose brother Vinod is Anni’s dad, said: “It’s very sad what has happened to Shrien but it’s because the process has been allowed to go on too long.”
Dewani’s spokesman said his worsening condition was partly due to the “lies” coming from South Africa. The country’s top prosecutor, Menzi Semelani, said on Saturday that Dewani “murdered his wife” and wrongly accused him of leaving South Africa illegally.
