India News:

Man's bid to 'sell' baby foiled

=====================================================

HYDERABAD: A man's alleged attempt to sell his new-born daughter was foiled by hospital staff on Sunday. The parents, however, claimed that they were giving the child away for adoption as they couldn't afford to raise five daughters.

According to police, auto driver Shankar Naik's wife gave birth to their fifth child at Usha Maternity Hospital in Hema Nagar, Medipally, on Saturday. The couple, which migrated from Mahbubnagar and stays in Saidabad, already has four daughters.

Naik then approached their doctor Uma Maheswari at the hospital to allegedly sell the baby. Cops said that Dr Maheswari, who works at Sri Krishna Maternity Hospital and also as consultant at Usha Maternity Hospital, agreed to get someone to take their daughter. However, hospital staff came to know of it and alerted locals and also the media. In the ensuing melee, the person who came to the hospital to take the baby fled.

No case was registered against either the parents or any other person as there was no complaint, cops said. "We found a document signed by the mother clearly mentioning that the baby was being given for adoption. There was no mention of selling," Medipally inspector S Krishna Prasad said.
