Sri Lanka back to 'fishing' Indian fishermen
New Delhi, Feb 16: The Indian fisherman still seem to be venturing into troubled waters and the Sri Lankan adventures with Indian fishing folks seem to increase and showing no sign of respite. Today (Feb 16) saw 106 fishermen being detained by Sri Lankan police following allegations that they were "illegally" fishing in Sri Lankan territory.
After a number of fisherman were killed by Lankan authorities and after the issue have been raised in the diplomatic circles the problem is still prevalent. The present episode happened when Sri Lankan fishermen intercepted Indian fishermen off the coast of Point Pedro in the north. They were apparently handed over to police, reveal sources.
The Indian consul general Mahalingam was rushed to meet the detained fishermen after taking orders from Foreign Minister SM Krishna. The imprisoned fishermen will be produced in court today (Feb 16). According to reports from the Indian consulate officials in Jaffna, 112 fishermen are being held along with 18 trawlers. The Indian High Commission is pursuing the case in earnest to secure the release of the detained fishermen and are in discussions with Lankan Attorney General Mohan Peires.
With most victimised fishermen hailing from Tamil Nadu, the ruling DMK government is not intending to take the case lightly. The DMK announced in its official press release that that it will stage a demonstration at the Sri Lankan consulate in Chennaiand at various ports all over Tamil Nadu in protest against the ''abduction'' and pressing for immediate steps to get them released.
