(RTTNews) - At least 19 people have been shot or hacked to death in a brutal attack by a group of unidentified gunmen on a village in northwestern Nigeria, officials said late on Sunday.

According to witnesses, more than 150 men armed with guns and machets were involved in raiding Lingyado in Zamfara state bordering Niger.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the gruesome incident, but Nigerian authorities believe it was in retaliation to an earlier attack on another village in the area.
Such periodic bouts of religious violence and clashes over grazing rights are common in Nigeria, the northern regions of which are predominantly Muslim with the South being dominated by Christians.

Nigerian authorities say there is no evidence to link the incident to the radical Boko Haram Islamic sect active in northern Nigeria. Boko campaigns against Western education, which it considers as against Islamic teachings. It wants enforcement of strict Islamic laws in Nigeria after overthrowing the current government.

The extremist organization had claimed responsibility for the deadly car bomb attack that killed at least 18 people at the United Nations building in capital Abuja in August. It was also responsible for the June attack on the police headquarters there as well as a series of bomb attacks in May. .. by RTT Staff Writer
