10 Tips for Protecting Your Jewelry from Thieves

This topic should attract most women in our world.  Who doesn’t like jewelry of the expensive kind, or heirloom pieces passed down from generation to generation.  Keeping valuables safe from potential thieves is one situation that should be considered with much thought.  For sure the day of hiding things in the sock drawer or between the mattress and springs is long gone.

My first thought is a safety deposit box.  Rented from the bank for a small fee per month is at least one solution.  However the down side to that is needing something to match an outfit, or for a special occasion, and not having it handy.  One thing for sure should you own pieces of jewelry that are heirlooms and rare, putting them in a safe deposit box is a great idea.  Plan ahead when you will wear the broach or diamond pendent and make a trip to the bank beforehand.

Think like a robber for a moment.  Where would one likely go to find cash or fine jewelry?  Then after you have made your list, do just the opposite!  Hide your treasures in unlikely places.  It will also throw off the thinking of people who are so dumb as to break into your home in the first place.  We should be able to outsmart them.

It may not deter a thief, but it will make you feel better to at least try.  Install an alarm system.  And even though it may not discourage a thief from trying to get into your house, one thing about it, it would not be an easy access while you are asleep or even at work.  One caution is this – don’t fail to set the alarm when you are going to be out several hours, or before going to bed.

I have just learned about another idea in home safes which is remarkable in itself.  It is called the Diversion Safe.  The idea is the (usually small) safe looks like most anything you would have in your home normally.  For example a Canister, a coffee can, a can of hair spray, or a candle, to name a few.  Items you would have anywhere in your home.  In my research I found also that the first place a thief will go in your home to find your jewelry r cash is your bedroom to your jewelry box.  Therefore if you have fake flowers in pots that are actually a Diversion Safe who but you would think to look there.  http://www.diversionsafesonline.com/ is the website I found for further ideas of Diversion Safe.

Of course there is always the tried and true wall safe with the combination lock.  It will need to be professionally installed, but what you save in lost/stolen jewelry would be well worth the up-front money you spend.
One important thing is to insure prized heirloom or expensive pieces.  True money cannot replace an heirloom, but there is safety in knowing you would not be out all the money involved in replacing the expensive pieces.  Having your fine jewelry appraised every few years is important especially to have the pieces properly insured.

Goodwill or the local library has old books for sale you wouldn’t mind mutilating.  How about a book the size of “Gone with the Wind”?  Cut the inside out to create a hole in the middle of the back and front hard covers, making an excellent place to store several pieces of jewelry.  Then place the book back on the book shelf among the other books.

Then there is the idea of the wall switch.  Cut a hole in the wall, install a wall outlet safe.  This could easily fall in the category of the diversion safe, and may be sold on their site, but for the one who can do small carpentry jobs; this could save money in the long run.  It looks like a wall outlet otherwise.

I love clocks.  Wall clocks, grandfather clocks, or ornamental clocks.  One safety measure you might try is a wall clock safe.  By now a thief will have to be a college graduate to figure out just where you keep your valuables.  So keep him guessing.

One thing for sure, flaunting Jewelry in a showy fashion, would inevitably bring attention to the expense of it.  Expensive Jewelry should at least be worn on special occasions, and care should be taken otherwise to keep it safe from would be robbers.  For those of us who prize those treasured pieces, I cannot visualize doing such a thing as to carelessly wear it.  So strike this last paragraph since we don’t fall into that category.
