Nutrition tips to reduce your risk of heart disease

Everyone knows that the heart is a vital organ that we cannot live without. However, when you get right down to it, the heart is just a pump. It's a complex and important one, yes, but still just a pump. As with all other pumps it can become clogged, it can break down and it needs repair. This is why it is critical that we know more about heart health. With a little knowledge about your heart and what is good for it, you can significantly reduce your risk of heart problems.

According to recent studies by the Canadian Heart and Stroke foundation, every 7 minutes someone in Canada dies from heart disease or stroke. This is quite an alarming statistic as heart disease is the single most preventable cause of death.

Dietary advice for reducing the risk of heart disease includes eating a balanced diet with less saturated fat, more fresh fruits and vegetables, more fish, less sugar, more fiber and for most people, fewer total calories. Here are a few examples of some superfoods for the heart:

Salmon
Fish is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids that protect your heart by reducing both inflammation and the risk of blood clots. These fats also work to keep your cholesterol levels healthy.

Olive Oil
Olive oil reduces your risk of heart disease by lowering your bad cholesterol levels.

Oats
Oats contain a soluble fiber called beta glucan that helps reduce total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Soluble fiber also helps keep your digestive system healthy.

Almonds
Almonds and other nuts contain healthy oils, vitamin E and other substances that will help keep cholesterol levels in check. Almonds are also a good source of protein and fiber.

Red wine
Red wine contains a powerful antioxidant called resveratrol. Resveratrol has been shown to be good for your heart. Be sure to enjoy red wine in moderation as studies show that only 4 ounces of red wine is needed for health benefits.

Whole Grains
Whole grains provide vitamins and fiber that will help to keep your heart healthy.

Tomatoes
Tomatoes are packed with vitamins and lycopene, which has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease.

So take this list with you on your next grocery shopping trip and think about your heart (instead of your stomach!) as you're filling up your cart.
