His CV reads impressive — a criminal lawyer, with a first-class in BSc and a diploma in handwriting and graphology. According to the police, however, the 73-year-old is a ‘notorious cheat’.Dhaniram Mittal was arrested for his alleged involvement in 89 cases of vehicle theft and forgery by the Delhi Police from Haryana’s Dabhwali area on March 11, when he, along with his associate Teja Singh (50), was selling a vehicle stolen from the Capital.The interrogation of Mittal’s foster son Sanjay — arrested on December 26 last year — and two of his associates — apprehended in January this year — led to the arrest of their gang leader and Singh. Meenu Choudhury, DCP (Northwest) said, “He told us that in the late 1970s, he had forged a resignation letter of a judge and sent it to authorities. He even received an acknowledgment card. He then prepared a forged appointment letter and presided over the district court in Rohtak for 40 days before his bluff was called, though this is still being verified.”Mittal allegedly entered the world of crime from the office of RTO in Rohtak, where he started forging driving licences and registration papers. He was arrested for the first time in 1964.“Mittal had access to local RTOs through touts operating outside such offices and would get photocopies of the RCs and then forge the signatures,” Choudhury added. Later, he would pass on the stolen vehicles to Sanjay and would give the affidavit to the buyers on behalf of the real owner by forging their signatures.During interrogation, it came to light that Singh came in contact with Dhaniram through Sanjay while they were in a jail in Punjab. After coming out from jail, both met again and began committing crimes together.Police have recovered nine stolen vehicles, four of which were hidden in Singh’s five-acre plot in Dhani, a village in Rajasthan.(indian express)============================================
