‘They used hypnosis to rob elderly’
Two members of a gang from Maharashtra, who allegedly robbed the elderly by posing as policemen, have been arrested in South Delhi. The accused used to “hypnotise” their victims and steal their valuables, police said.
Identifying the duo as Sartaz Ali (50) and Sheru Hussain (35), hailing from Thane district in Maharashtra, police said they had robbed a retired principal in Malviya Nagar on February 18. “They approached the woman, posing as policemen. The two convinced her to keep the jewellery, which she was wearing, in a polythene bag. Later, while she was distracted, they replaced it,” said DCP (South) H G S Dhaliwal.
“The gangsters, who used to come to Delhi twice a month by air, would stay at hotels in Nizamuddin and Paharganj. They would even bring motorcycles from Mumbai by train,” he said.
After committing the crime, everybody except for Ali and another member would return to Mumbai by air. “The two would go back by train instead, taking the motorcycles and loot along with them,” Dhaliwal said, adding that Ali’s grandfather was Iranian. The duo were arrested in Madangir on a tip-off.
“The gang members, especially Ali, are adept in hypnotism. Ali and his aides used to visit different states and rob people after hypnotising them,” Dhaliwal said.
