WORLD Water Day will be observed today (Tuesday) with a view to creating awareness about clean water for healthy world.
Besides non-governmental organizations, government departments and educational institutions are organising seminars, workshops and rallies to highlight the importance of the day.
The objective of World Water Day 2011 is to focus international attention on the impact of rapid urban population growth, industrialization and uncertainties caused by climate change, conflicts and natural disasters on urban water systems.
This year theme, Water for cities: responding to the urban challenge, aims to spotlight and encourage governments, organisations, communities, and individuals to actively engage in addressing the challenges of urban water management.
UN HABITAT, Pakistan in collaboration with Ministry of Environment, UNICEF, WSSCC, WaterAid and PIEDAR is leading the Day, which is held annually on March 22 as a means of focusing attention on the importance of fresh water and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. UN HABITAT is celebrating World Water Day in 6 cities of Pakistan. The events are will be responding to various urban water challenges with a special focus on two sub themes: Drinking water quality at point-of-use as well as Reuse of Grey water as a response to climate change adaptation. COMSATS Institute of Information Technology is also arranging a function at its campus. International World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day.
Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater. On this page, we present a brief overview of the different themes that have been the focus of World Water Day celebrations.
