Girl kills father
The victim claimed that her father had tried to assault her sexually when they were alone. “She didn’t seem to have any other option."
CHENNAI: A final-year computer science student was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly killing her drunk father, who she said tried to rape her at knife-point at their house near Mangadu. The police said 18-year-old Anju Germin grabbed the knife her father, M Ratnamani (57), was holding and repeatedly stabbed him in the stomach. It appears to be an act committed in self-defence, the police said.
According to the police, Ratnamani's son Selvin Prabhu (27) had left home for work around 10pm on Tuesday and Anju was asleep. "Ratnamani first approached his daughter and asked for water and then asked her to share his bed. She refused but he threatened her at knife-point and tried to grab her," a senior police officer said. Suddenly, she snatched the knife and repeatedly stabbed him in the stomach, the police said.

Ratnamani, a habitual drinker, fell to the ground and became unconscious due to the loss of blood. Anju immediately called her brother Prabhu and explained the incident.

'Self defence'

He asked their houseowner to stay with Anju until he returned early in the morning. Around 8am, Prabhu informed the Mangadu police. After preliminary enquiries, the police sent the body to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for postmortem. "We found Ratnamani's body in a pool of blood in his bedroom. Anju was there until we arrested her," a police officer said. "She said she stabbed him four times in the stomach," he said. Initially, Anju claimed that she had killed her father for repeatedly questioning her about a gold chain that went missing some time back. Later, she admitted that her father had tried to assault her sexually when they were alone. "She didn't seem to have any other option. It appears to be an act in self-defence. She may get bail," senior police officer said.

Late in the evening, Anju was remanded in judicial custody and sent to the Puzhal prison after being produced at the Poonamallee magistrate's court. According to the police, Ratnamani, a welder, had returned from Bahrain three years ago and took a house for rent on Darmaraja Kovil street in Kovur near Mangadu. While his son Selvin Prabhu works in a BPO, his daughter Anju is a student of St Joseph College in Kovur. His wife had died some years ago.
