NAIROBI, Kenya -- The European Union Naval Force says Somali pirates have released a cargo ship with 25 crew onboard but that the sailors were forced to abandon the ship shortly after they were freed.
Thursday's statement from the EU says marine authorities received a distress call from the MV Rak Afrikana on Wednesday because the cargo ship had a hole in the hull and was taking on water. It had been released from pirate control hours earlier.
Two warships responded to the call and 25 crew members were evacuated.
No information was available on the cause of the damage but the statement says the crew members are in reasonable health considering the length of their captivity.
The Rak Afrikana was seized by pirates in April 2010.
